Model United Nations, also known as MUN, is an actual simulation of the United Nations.
The agenda of developing a common European policy towards migrants, asylum seekers and refugees marked the first meeting of the European states at LDAMUN venue. Led by the directors Alejandro Perez and Ilias Papadopoulos, the committee can be proud of successfully achieving relaxed, but still productive atmosphere; however, there is always a room for a heated discussion.

Starting with the mock-session dedicated to the issue of preserving European traditions, the following discussion on refugees unfolded in a quite unpredictable way. The delegation of Czech Republic initiated pretty continuous and intense debates on the issue of nationalism being inspired by the massive migrant crisis in Europe. This controversial topic inspired the delegations of Germany, Italy and Poland. The delegation of Belgium tried its best to call upon a peaceful and thoughtful discussion, but the following remark of Poland turned the debate even more fierce. The delegation suggested that the fear of refugees can be justified; the emphasis was put on the complex and truly ambivalent nature of the crisis. However, the delegations of Czech Republic and Italy were absolutely relentless in their defense of a liberal point of view. Truly, if it was not up to the two agendas that needed the committee's attention, the European Council would still be discussing the issue of nationalism. Probably even by now.
Anthi Athanasia Chondrou, the representative of Czech Republic and the initiator of the prolonged debate on nationalism commented on lack of diversity in the Council: “Speaking from the inside is always easier than speaking from the outside. So we are definitely on a safe ground while being the European delegations in the European Council”. Anthi herself is half-Greek and half-Dutch, and she has been reinforcing her dedication to Model UN since high school.

Since the committee was put on the right track and the variety of the views on the first agenda were presented, it was clear that the recent debate on nationalism has identified the relations within the committee. However, it only contributed to the overall eagerness of the delegates to resolve the current issue.
Alejandro Perez, the Director of the European Council, commented on that:

“The delegates have proven to be really passionate when it comes to treating the topic concerning refugees, migrants and asylum seekers, which has led them to engage in intense debates in order to show their stances on the issue. We are really looking forward to the second day of sessions. The overall debate was very fruitful and I believe we will have a good resolution by the end of Saturday”.
The board of directors and their creative approach evidently solidified the delegates' comprehension of the Rules of Procedure. Ilias and Alejandro could not help but to point out the issue of talking in first person while taking the floor; their response was prompt and more than efficient. The delegates who were repeatedly saying “I” and “me” were asked to read an extract from the notorious “50 Shades of Grey”; by all means, this time they had to do in third person. We leave the rest to your imagination.
